Melrose House

Built by wealthy stagecoach owner George Jesse Heyes in 1886, the house was requisitioned by Lord Roberts as the headquarters of the British forces after the invasion of Pretoria in June 1990. The Peace Treaty of Vereeniging which ended the Anglo-Boer War (1899-1902) was signed here on 31 May 1902.

The interior of the museum boasts stained glass windows, paintings by English artists, an impressive collection of period furniture, ornate ceilings and fireplaces, as well as valuable porcelain ornaments that belonged to the Heys family. Exhibitions, antique fairs, talks, workshops and shows are regularly staged here. A tea garden provides refreshments.
