Premier Diamond Mine Cullinan

The Premier Diamond Mine in the town of Cullinan, some 30 km east of Tshwane, is famous for the discovery of the massive Cullinan diamond in 1905. To this day the gem is by far the largest ever found. It weighed 3106 carat or 621 grams. The stone was cut into nine large stones and 96 smaller brilliants. All nine large stones are either in the Crown jewels or are owned by the British Royal family.

Cullinan has retained the old mine village character and is well conserved as a living museum. There are many historic stone and corrugated iron buildings dating from the 1900s which are still in use today. Tours of the mine are available.

Address: From the N4 to Witbank, take the R515 off-ramp. Proceed for about 14 km and turn left at the R513.
