2010 FIFA World Cup™

In 2010 Tshwane will play host to the FIFA World Cup by providing its prestigious Loftus Versfeld stadium in the heart of the city as a venue for first and second round matches of the tournament. The stadium is the home ground for Premier Soccer League champions Mamelodi Sundowns and has a capacity of 49 000.

Tshwane has long been a city with a close association with top professional football in South Africa and the breeding ground for many of the country's top sides.

Arcadia and Berea were the city's first professional sides. In later years Mamelodi Sundowns, Mamelodi United, Pretoria City and SuperSport United contributed their share to the game. Pride of place goes to Mamelodi Sundowns who broke the Professional Soccer League record by winning the league five times in a row since 1988.

2010 FIFA World Cup™ games will also be played in Cape Town, Durban, Johannesburg, Mangaung/Bloemfontein, Nelson Mandela Bay/Port Elizabeth, Nelspruit, Polokwane and Rustenburg between 11 June and 11 July 2010.
