Climate / weather

South Africa has a wonderful climate with more than 300 days of sunshine per year on average. The Western Cape has a Mediterranean climate with warm, dry summers and cold, wet winters. The northern part of the country (including Gauteng) gets summer rainfall, is hot in summer and mild in winter. The coastal areas of KwaZulu-Natal and eastern Mpumalanga are subtropical and humid. Snowfalls occur in winter in the Drakensberg mountains, Lesotho and the high-lying areas of the Cape. If you're visiting from the northern hemisphere, just remember: when it's winter over there, it's summer here - and vice versa. Remember sunglasses and sunscreen.

Tshwane is located in a summer rainfall area. Hot days are regularly relieved by short and intense afternoon or evening thunderstorms. Lightning and hail frequently accompany storms. Summer temperatures range from 16°C at night to 30°C during the day. Winters are mild and dry with temperatures averaging between 5°C and 20°C.
