Road regulations and licences

Driving licence requirements

If your driving licence is in English or any one of South Africa's other ten official languages and it contains a photo and your signature integrated into the licence document, then it is legally acceptable as a valid driving licence in South Africa. However, some car rental and insurance companies may still insist that you provide an international driving permit. It is generally best to acquire a permit in your country of origin, prior to starting your journey, regardless of whether your licence is legally acceptable or not.

Driving in South Africa

In South Africa we drive on the left-hand side of the road and seat belts are compulsory. Filling stations, also known as garages, provide petrol or diesel. Most accept garage cards, but not general credit cards. For country trips it is advisable to have cash available for filling the vehicle.

The general speed limit on national highways, urban freeways and other major routes is 120km/h (75mph). On secondary (rural) roads it is 100km/h (60mph). In built-up areas it is usually 60km/h (35mph) unless otherwise indicated. Check the road signs.
